Standing Firm in the Gospel

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand.” — 1 Corinthians 15:1

Paul often spoke about the importance of standing. In Ephesians 6:13 he urges believers to “stand firm,” and in 1 Corinthians 15:1 he reminds the church that we stand specifically in the gospel. The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ—His death for our sins, His burial, and His resurrection, all in accordance with the Scriptures. Because of His sacrifice, healing and freedom belong to us.

There are moments in life when the attacks come hard. Emotions rise. Lies surface. Shame and guilt try to settle in. But the gospel gives us a solid place to stand when everything around us feels unsteady.

I recently spoke with a young lady who had walked through a horrific situation. Shame weighed heavily on her, and guilt kept whispering lies. As she shared her heart, I reminded her that while she felt ashamed, she had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross. Christ took all our shame, all our sin, and He carried it away. I shared Scriptures with her—truths she could hold onto when lies came against her. I reminded her of what the gospel declares: she is righteous, holy, chosen, loved, a new creation, and seated with Christ.

The truth is, it can be difficult to stand on the Word when our emotions speak loudly. That’s why Scripture calls us to align ourselves with God’s truth, not our feelings. Satan will always push us to speak what we feel, but God invites us to stand in what He has already said. He tells the weak to say, “I am strong,” and the sick to say, “I am healed.” These declarations are not wishful thinking—they are part of the gift He gave when He came to earth.

Though we are new creations in Christ, we must continually renew our minds with the Word. What changes us is not what we see or even what we feel—it’s what we believe. And faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. When faith joins with the truth of Scripture, we receive all the power we need to stand firm in the good news of Jesus Christ.
