Finding God in the Midst of the Breakdown

“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24, ESV

Tears flowed, my heart ached, and I was frustrated and confused. I felt like nothing I was doing was producing any fruit. I was tired, full of complaints, and unable to even articulate the words I wanted to pray because I had allowed myself to get so worked up. I felt completely discombobulated.

As I sat down to pray, I began praying in my spiritual language because nothing else seemed to help. While praying, I sensed the Holy Spirit prompting me to call a certain friend. I didn’t want to. I told the Lord, “I want to talk to You,” and continued praying in the Spirit. But after the third time I felt that same nudge, I finally obeyed and called her.

When she answered, she immediately asked how I was doing and whether I had listened to the message she had left on my phone. I told her I had not, and she suggested I listen to it and then call her back. Her message brought comfort, confirmation, peace, and calm to my weary soul. She had no idea what I was going through, but God had given her a message that addressed every complaint and concern I had brought before Him. The answer was already waiting on my phone.

When I called her back, I shared how I had been feeling and how perfectly her message had met me. As I began talking, the Holy Spirit started speaking through her to me. I received specific instructions, direction, and loving encouragement that settled my spirit. She later told me that she had walked through the same emotions and struggles just a few weeks before. God had brought her through—and now He was using her to help me through.

On this journey, all of us will face difficult moments when we feel lost and unsure of what is happening. We may begin evaluating ourselves in negative ways because that is exactly what the enemy wants. But God uses these moments to draw us closer to Himself. I remember my friend saying, “When God seems the quietest, that is often when He is speaking the loudest.” I just needed to sit still long enough to hear Him. The Scripture “Be still and know that I am God” resonated deeply in my spirit.

Just like soldiers on the battlefield, we will have good days and challenging days. When the challenging ones come, I recommend the following Scriptures, which have helped me tremendously: Matthew 11:28–29, Psalm 32:7–8, 1 John 1:9, Psalm 24:14, and Zephaniah 3:17. I encourage you to read each of these chapters in full—they will help realign your heart and strengthen your spirit.
