Guard Your Heart
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:6–7
How do we guard and protect our hearts?
In this passage, the Apostle Paul teaches that we must let go of anxiety—worry, unease, fretfulness, and nervousness—through prayer. As we bring our concerns to God with thanksgiving, His peace takes their place. That peace is what protects our hearts.
Often, when we’re faced with decisions—whether about a relationship, a purchase, or where we should go—God’s peace will guide us. Feelings of uneasiness in our spirit serve as warning signs that we may be heading in the wrong direction. They prompt us to pause and seek God before moving forward. Sometimes that inner restlessness is a whisper that the enemy is trying to lead us astray. God’s peace, however, never leaves us anxious, worried, or unsettled. Instead, it brings rest, calmness, and quiet confidence, assuring us that we are on the right path. His peace is confirmation that our hearts are truly guarded.
When we seek God in those pivotal, confusing moments, He provides direction. Scripture tells us to come to Him in prayer—with thanksgiving—making our requests known. Thanksgiving is vital because God commands it, and because He inhabits the praises of His people. The more we come to Him in prayer, the closer He draws us to Himself, deepening our relationship. Think about it: the more time you spend with someone, the better you know and understand them. The same is true with our Father. Prayer is how we build intimacy with Him. It’s far more than a ritual; it is fellowship with the Almighty.
God promises that when we pray and give thanks, we do not have to live in worry. Instead, if we talk with Him about everything and thank Him in all things, His peace will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We don’t have to protect our hearts by our own strength—hallelujah! All we need to do is surrender control to Him.
