The Battle is Won
…a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. — Deuteronomy 2:21–22 (ESV)
I have been reading through the Bible with the podcast @jasiriouslyspeaking, it has been such a blessing. While studying Deuteronomy, this passage reminded me of how God is continually at work in our lives. In this scripture, Moses is recounting the Israelites' journey through the wilderness. He shares this because those who left Egypt with him—those 20 years and older—had died due to their disobedience. As a result, God declared that they would not enter the Promised Land.
Now Moses is speaking to the children and grandchildren of those who perished, as they are preparing to enter the Promised Land. What encouraged me so deeply is the part of the passage where the Ammonites (descendants of Lot, Abraham’s nephew) were at a disadvantage. They never would have been able to defeat the Anakim on their own, but the scripture says that the Lord destroyed the Anakim before the Ammonites. God did the same for the descendants of Esau (Jacob’s brother) by destroying the Horites.
This word was such a beautiful reminder and confirmation that God keeps His promises. Abraham had long since passed, yet God was still taking care of his descendants.
As believers, we can rest assured that no matter what comes against us, the battle is already won. God keeps His word! He says, "The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent" (Exodus 14:14). He also reminds us not to take revenge into our own hands: "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord'" (Romans 12:19, ESV).
What’s most encouraging is that both armies God fought against were much larger than the people He was protecting. It's a powerful reminder that no matter how big the challenge or obstacle ahead, nothing is bigger than our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen!
Key Takeaways:
The size of the battle is not a problem for Yeshua.
We are not called to fight the battle—God said He would do that for us.
Our role is to put on the whole armor of God and to stand.
